PASSERIFORMES: Petroicidae
Petroica rosea
The Rose Robin has been a regular winter visitor to Castlemaine Botanic Gardens, adding its colour to the many other colourful birds there.
Brigadier Hugh Officer wrote "There are few prettier sights than to see this rose-tinted sprite performing aerial evolutions almost outrivalling the Grey Fantail. While doing so the tail which, for a robin, appears unusually long, is well fanned out so that at first glance it might actually be mistaken for a fantail."*
This particular Rose Robin when I saw it, was keeping company with a Grey Fantail, or vice versa, so perhaps the birds are even confusing themselves, or maybe they just like each other's style.
